During the past two weeks, I’ve spent the better part of my time trying to
find the right way (both personally and as a representative of the archives
community) to respond to disaster relief in Katrina’s wake.  One of the most
challenging aspects has been to know what to do in such a dynamic situation.
Just when you get a plan, the circumstances change enough that you’re back
to square one.  I am constantly reminded how the scale of this catastrophe
complicates relief and recovery efforts.

Federal Assistance

Disaster Helpis part of the President’s Disaster Management Egov Initiative and provides information about the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) disaster application process and other government assistance.

Guide to the Disaster Declaration Process and Federal Disaster Assistance explains the declaration process, provides an overview of the assistance available, and lists contact information for the FEMA regional offices.

Heritage Preservation, working with FEMA and the National Endowment for the Arts, has released Before and After Disasters: Federal Funding for Cultural Institutions FEMA 533/September 2005 (PDF). This book provides information on sources of funding and details on what activities are eligible. It also explains how the federal emergency assistance system works and gives tips to get started.
