Not only are my films in dire need of restoration. It's a global phenomenon, a crisis. In 1995, celebrating the centenary of cinema in Paris, UNESCO invited a dozen practitioners of cinema worldwide, including me, to safeguard the treasures of human skill and creativity. UNESCO chief Federico Mayor declared that "...emerging as it does in painting, theatre, music, literature and photography, the art of cinema invented in 1895 is the custodian of the memory of the 20th century".
