On This Day in History: Paramount’s Last Picture Show

As the curtains closed over the screen on August 22, 1962, the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre at Flatbush & DeKalb Avenues was history. The last feature film at the famous movie palace was John Wayne in Hatari. Attendance on closing night in the 4,126 seat theatre was about 300. Its grand opening as the first movie theater built in America expressly for sound pictures was on November 24, 1928, with the feature Manhattan Cocktail starring Nancy Carroll and Richard Arlen.

'Only copy of Devdas (1934) rotting in Bangladesh'

DHAKA: A copy of Promothesh Barua's "Devdas", made in 1934 and said to be the only copy existing, is in a bad shape in the Bangladesh Film Archives, its sound track erased and footage damaged, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Academy to salute Japan's Kurosawa

The release of the restored "Rashomon" print and Acad tribute coincide with the 10th anniversary of Kurosawa's death on Sept. 6, 1998. The film's restoration was undertaken by the Academy Film Archive, the Film Foundation and the Kadokawa Culture Promotion Foundation.

LAOS: Film Reveals CIA's 'Most Secret Place on Earth'

One of the most interesting aspects of ‘The Most Secret Place’ is that it incorporates previously unused footage Eberle managed to collect, including film of actual combat missions and day-to-day life at Long Chen. This was gathered from myriad sources, including the U.S. National Film Archive and footage held by television stations from across Europe.

The North American Tour Of Nagisa Oshima’s Audacious Oeuvre

Cinematheque Ontario will tour the retrospective to key cultural institutions in approximately a dozen cities in Canada and the United States, including Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Pacific Cinematheque (Vancouver), Harvard Film Archive (Cambridge), Northwest Film Center (Seattle), Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley), the National Gallery of Art (Washington) and George Eastman House (Rochester).

Space for oddities: The Stanley Kubrick Archive

With the research, photographic assignments and location scouting, it took longer and longer, particularly in his later years, for Kubrick to begin shooting his films. Many did not get that far: more than once, a Kubrick project was gazumped by a similar film shot and released in half the time. This aura of mystery hanging over Kubrick's almost-movies, and the legacy of the 13 that he did complete, is captured in the fascinating archived material stored in the new, purpose-built Archives and Special Collections Centre at the London College of Communication.

Archive buys earliest Aussie sound film

AUSTRALIA'S earliest surviving sound film has been acquired by the National Film and Sound Archive. The film, which runs for 10 minutes, covers the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of York in Sydney in May 1927.
