Damaged prints leave govt red-faced

KOLKATA: The fact that film-maker Mrinal Sen had to opt out of this year's Cannes Film Festival, where he had been specially invited for a mini retrospective, has moved none other than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Sen had to stay away from the prestigious festival because the films that were scheduled to be shown were not in good condition and needed immediate restoration.

Death by a Thousand Director's Cuts: how DVD marketing is rewriting the history of film

Regarding terms like director's cut and restoration: The fact that these categories are now integral parts of sales pitches seriously diminishes the possibility of their serving as accurate descriptions. Arguably, one reason why the film industry has encouraged and promoted the concept of director's cuts, even though this might appear to be counter to its own interests, is that it enables a film's owner to sell the same product to the same customer twice—or even, in a few special cases, three or four times.

"Lick This": LOC, Flickr, and the Limits of Crowd Sourcing

In January of 2008 the Library of Congress and the photo-sharing web service Flickr announced a unique partnership. The Library of Congress Flickr Pilot Project put 3000 historic LOC photographs on the website Flickr and invited the public to view, annotate, tag, and generally mess with them. This was perhaps the LOC's first foray into the world of Web 2.0 and generated a tremendous buzz.

An Ode to Kodachrome

Today, Eastman Kodak Co. announced it would stop selling its iconic Kodachrome film. The product didn’t quite make it to its 75th year, despite efforts to keep the film alive. But what about all the other cultural references to Kodachrome over the last three-quarters-of-a-century?

Which images from 2009 will future generations want to revisit?

For Robin Baker, the head curator of the BFI archive, more important still are the grandchildren yet to come. His stock of thousands of miles of film and documents on television and film stretches, as you would expect, far into the past, but it also reaches for the future. Each week the archive, which is housed around a group of old farm buildings in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, selects a range of current images from feature films, commercial network television and the visual arts to preserve for the ages.

National Archives Launches YouTube Channel

On Friday, June 19, the National Archives will formally launch a YouTube channel to showcase popular archived films, inform the public about upcoming events around the country, and bring National Archives exhibits to the people. The launch will coincide with the National Archives 75th Anniversary. The URL is www.youtube.com/USNationalArchives.
