Mr. Ferriero (his name rhymes with stereo), who was confirmed by the Senate late last year, is the first national archivist who has been a librarian, a career turn he modestly attributes to his failure to get into medical school after majoring in liberal arts at Northeastern University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English literature after dropping out to enlist as a Navy hospital corpsman, serving in Vietnam.
