Hollywood archive unearthed in NZ film capital

BRIAN MEACHAM: Many of the films that we ended up finding are to our knowledge, completely lost, except for the copies that were in Wellington. The most notable film that has garnered some attention is Upstream which is an early silent feature by great director John Ford who later went on to have success and notoriety in the talking pictures, but most all of his silent films do not survive.

BFI Film Center plans scrapped

The U.K. government has pulled the plug on £45 million ($67 million) plans for the British Film Institute (BFI) Film Center here in the British capital and has also shelved plans for the £2.5 million ($3.7 million) BFI archive digital access project.

Silent film treasures to be preserved

The National Film Preservation Foundation and the New Zealand Film Archive on Monday plan to announce the formation of a partnership to preserve and make available a collection of 75 silent films that have been unavailable for decades. All of these rare films, made in the U.S., are on highly volatile, hazardous nitrate stock.
