New study - Web archives: now and in the future

The National Archives is pleased to announce a study into how archived websites are collected and made available to users. The study is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee and will take place in collaboration with the UK Web Archiving Consortium.

Sony, Regal ink deal for digital 4K projectors

Sony Electronics has inked a deal with Regal Entertainment to supply the nation's No. 1 exhibitor with 4K digital projectors throughout its entire circuit. The deal represents Sony's second big d-cinema hardware coup in the past few months. In March, it struck an agreement with AMC Entertainment -- which operates the second-biggest U.S. circuit -- to supply its theaters with digital projectors.

NPRbackstory: Finding value in news archives through automation

It was from an automated Twitter account called NPRbackstory, a project by a man named Keith Hopper. Keith is a project manager at Public Interactive, a division of NPR, and NPRbackstory is an intriguing experiment in getting value out of one of the most overlooked assets any established news organization has: its archives.

Has online piracy reached a tipping point?

For years, digital technology and the Internet have provided a virtual buffet of digital content from which millions have feasted for free. Whether it be downloading movies illegally found with the help of the Pirate Bay, ripping a movie rental from Netlix to a computer hard drive, republishing an unauthorized copy of a news photograph to the Web, or sharing music on peer-to-peer services, the people who create this content have begun to send a message: "no more free lunches."

Sony inks d-cinema deal; Warners 'close'

With official word Thursday that Sony has inked a virtual-print-fee agreement with the biggest digital-cinema integrator, Warner Bros. becomes the sole holdout in exhibition's second-phase rollout of d-cinema systems. Sony signed its VPF pact with Digital Cinema Implementation Partners several weeks ago, but the news was delayed pending internal review of the formal announcement. Through VPFs, studios volunteer to pay the equivalent of print costs for years after switching to digital distribution as a means of defraying most exhibitor costs to convert auditoriums. Sony refers to its VPF as a "digital conversion fee."

YouTube and Universal to Create a Hub for Music

YouTube, the most popular online video site, and Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company, said on Thursday that they would create an online hub for music videos and related content. The agreement is the latest of many efforts by YouTube, which is owned by Google, to put more professionally produced content in front of its huge audience, and in turn, earn more money from advertising.

Sony, YouTube in talks to license films

Sony Pictures may be in talks with YouTube to license some of its films—in their full-length glory—to the popular video sharing site. If so, it could be among the first studios to do so on YouTube. YouTube certainly needs the help, too, because it's reportedly on track to lose nearly half a billion dollars this year alone.

Internet Archive, Sun create 'living history' of Web

Sun Microsystems, Inc. said Wednesday it's joining with digital library Internet Archive to create a "living history" of the Internet. “The Internet Archive offers long-term digital preservation to the ephemeral Internet,” said Brewster Kahle, founder of San Francisco-based Internet Archive.
