The Digital Motion Picture Metadata Symposium is a one-day, invitation only event featuring guest lectures and case studies on the cataloging and classification of digital motion picture materials.

The Digital Motion Picture Metadata Symposium is part of the Library of Congress's National Digital Information Infrastructure Preservation Program (NDIIPP). The Science and Technology Council is an NDIIPP participant, and is addressing aspects of the long-term preservation of creative content in digital form.

Objectives and topics covered:
• The Big Picture – long-term issues and challenges around digital assets for motion pictures, including archiving and retrieval, storage,

standards, encoding and preservation.

• The Basics – metadata lifecycles, taxonomy, controlled vocabularies and

the role of standards.

• Technical issues – workflow, integration, interoperability, and standards creation and adoption.

• Implementation and Operation – requirements for standards adoption and metadata capture implementation.

William Selig was an early film pioneer

Tonight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrates the legacy of Selig and other early L.A. film pioneers -- which culminated in 1914 with the release of the feature-length westerns, Cecil B. DeMille's "The Squaw Man" and Selig's "The Spoilers" -- with an evening of rarities from 1909 to 1912 titled "Movies! Moguls! Monkeys! And Murder!" at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

The Restored 1948 Masterpiece "The Red Shoes" to Premiere in Cannes

"The Red Shoes," the newly-restored 1948 masterpiece from directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as the Centerpiece of "Cannes Classics" section on May 15. Martin Scorsese will introduce the film which has undergone an extensive 2-year 4K digital restoration by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and The Film Foundation.

Cannes sports 'Shoes,' honors Losey

Satyajit Ray’s World of Restless Watchfulness and Nuance

“I find I am inimical to the idea of making two similar films in succession,” wrote the great Indian director Satyajit Ray in 1966, and in this, as in everything he wrote or filmed, he spoke the truth. At that point, 11 years after the premiere of his first movie, "Panther Panchali," he had written and directed 13 features, all of which will be on view at the Walter Reade Theater starting Wednesday, along with seven from the next decade of his career.
