Cloud Based Services Making Inroads

Despite such misgivings, under intense pressure to cut costs and become more efficient, some broadcasters are pioneering the use of cloud-based services. Among them: Gannett Broadcasting and Scripps Television. Both use Chyron’s AXIS cloud-based system for all their news-producing stations and both report that the service works reliably, saves money and has helped speed production and distribution of graphics among the stations.

AnyClip searches movies for quotes, famous moments

"It’s a tall order. AnyClip says it searches through all the publicly available video on the web. It doesn’t use speech-to-text technology. Instead it relies on movie buffs to tag and sort their favorite moments through the ClipIt platform - the Mechanical Turk approach to product development. Users can create metadata that AnyClip uses to sort through video."

Library of Congress test drives cloud storage

The Library of Congress National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program and DuraSpace have announced that they will launch a one-year pilot program to test the use of cloud technologies to enable perpetual access to digital content.

Kodak to Stop Making Kodachrome

Eastman Kodak Co. said Monday it will discontinue its iconic Kodachrome color film this year due to tumbling sales as photographers embrace newer Kodak films or digital-imaging technology. Kodak introduced the amateur color film in 1935 and it became the first commercially successful color film. But sales are just a fraction of 1% of the company's still-picture film revenue. The company doesn't break out such figures, but the segment in which Kodak's film sales are recorded had first-quarter revenue of $503 million.

InView comes into view

Just launched is BFI InView - Moving Images in the Public Sphere. This is the latest offering from the JISC Digitisation programme, and builds on the earlier Newsfilm Online to provide a high-value collection of digitised moving image content for use in UK higher education. InView offers 600 hours for full-length film and video material from the collections of the BFI National Archive and partner organisations: The National Archives, the Parliamentary Broadcasting Unit, the BBC, and Open Media.
